Awenheeyoh Powless, 23, of the Onondaga Nation, recently received an Honorable Mention by the National League of American Pen Women for her painting Dancing in Two Worlds.
This oil painting / mixed media piece includes both technical rendering and found objects such as denim, gum, and physical beadwork sewn into the canvas. The painting is a great representation of the balance of living in two worlds, learning to live and function in the mainstream culture while still maintaining her Onondaga culture and traditional roots.
A special ceremony will be held Saturday April 19th at May Memorial Unitarian Society, to recognize all winning entries. Congratulations Awenheeyoh!
