February 8th was a day of fun for all! Russell Houck from Sunnycrest Ski Club brought everything needed to cross-country ski. He even brought their snowmobile and track grooming equipment. With the rain that fell during the night, it wasn’t needed as it was wet in some spots and some snow had melted away. But what was left was just enough snow to glide themselves around the grounds.
The morning started out cloudy, but soon the sun came out from the clouds. Kool-Aid, Hot Chocolate, pretxels, and Hot Dogs brought by Sue Parsons and Cindy Shenandoah were very appetizing. Nyaweñha. If we only had some chili to go with it all…
What a great day! Lots of fresh air and exercise. Most of the skiers were trying this sport for the very first time. All enjoyed themselves! A little hill at the back door of the gymnasium was soon turned into the “big hill’. Here is where the brave ones went to slide down and tackle the “big jump”. What a blast that was.
Russell was very impressed with our community members who came to ski. He said, “This was the best beginner class he ever had. I am amazed at how fast both kids and adults picked it up.” Within an hour the group was racing and playing games. They even used the nature trail. It was a challenge. Ironically, with the skis and shoes that he brought worked out just great as everyone had a pair that fit them and no one was left out. All together there were 26 or so skiers that took part.
The troupe of skiers are anxious to perfect their new winter sport. They look forward to going to Sunnycrest Park to ski some more.
There’s more snow ahead, so keep your eyes and ears open for the next cross-country skiing outing!
