New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Marie Therese Dominguez today announced the completion of a $6.2 million project that replaced the Sentinel Heights Road bridge over Interstate 81 in the Town of Onondaga, Onondaga County. The project replaced the existing bridge, built in 1963, with a modern, two-span, multi-girder structure that will enhance safety and improve resiliency along an important connector linking the communities of Nedrow and Sentinel Heights. Located just north of the Onondaga Nation, the new bridge is adorned with the image of the Hiawatha Belt, honoring the Nation’s culture and heritage.
“This bridge replacement project demonstrates the Department of Transportation’s commitment to working in partnership with local communities to modernize our infrastructure and, at the same time, honor our state’s rich history,” Commissioner Dominguez said. “This new bridge and the historical image that adorns it will serve as lasting tribute to the contributions the Onondaga Nation have made to the greatness of Central New York.”
