The Onondaga Nation has announced the creation of the Upstate Onondaga Promise. The Upstate Onondaga Promise offers a full scholarship and stipend to any resident of the Onondaga Nation who is accepted and enrolled in the Norton College of Medicine at Upstate Medical University.
“This scholarship opportunity with the Norton College of Medicine and the Onondaga Nation supports Upstate Medical University’s mission of educating the health care professionals of tomorrow and builds on the university’s historic relationship with the Nation,” said Upstate Medical President Dr Mantosh Dewan.
Currently, Upstate partners with the New York State Department of Health to provide health care services on the Onondaga Nation at the Health Center. The Onondaga Nation Health Center provides services to individuals on the Nation. The Nation has the highest mortality rate in the greater Central New York area.
“We appreciate this generous offer from Upstate Medical and Dr. Dewan,” said Tadodaho Chief Sidney Hill. “With the Upstate Onondaga Promise, our people have a great opportunity to follow their dreams. I look forward to having many Onondagas take hold of it.”
Like the Haudenosaunee Promise, individuals need to be accepted into the program. Once accepted into the Norton College of Medicine, the Upstate Onondaga Promise will provide funding for students in good standing for all 4-years including tuition and yearly stipend.
